Chapter Eight

“Glad you could make it for dinner, honey,” Darla Appleton told Mac, smiling at her from across the table.

“Me too, Mom. Things have been crazy lately,” Mac blew out a breath, reaching for the mashed potatoes.

Her dad had modified the kitchen cabinets and appliances so that her mom could still enjoy her profound love of cooking, even from her wheelchair, and she was still as good a cook as ever. Most of the recipes used in the café were ones that Darla had developed. Mac, unfortunately, hadn’t acquired her mother’s culinary skills, though she had a hearty appreciation for good food.

“So I hear,” her mother gave her a look.

“What?” Mac asked, chewing a mouthful of tender, savory meatloaf.

“I had a rather disturbing conversation with Vern Williams today,” Darla gave her daughter a reproving look, eyebrow raised.

“Oh?” Mac squeaked, washing down her bite of food with a swallow of ice cold apple cider.

Perks of working at an orchard.

“What were you thinking?” Darla shook her head. “Someone is missing and if you keep poking around, you could be next. I know you just want to help, Mackenzie, but you need to stay out of this and let the sheriff do his job.”

“I haven’t done anything to get in the sheriff’s way, Mom,” Mac pointed out, spearing a green bean with her fork and popping it into her mouth.

“That you know of,” Bruce chimed in, giving Mac a look. “You could be making a suspect suspicious. What if somebody leaves town because they think you’re on to them?”

“Or what if they make you disappear too?” Darla frowned.

Mac was caught between two pairs of loving, but adamant gazes. She sighed and set down her fork.

“Fine,” she said, crossing her fingers under the table. “I’ll let the sheriff take care of it.”

And she would…but she had a couple more things that she was planning to do first.
